If no gridiron is to be had, add the sugar to the contents of the bowl and let
it boil 1/2 hour.
Brulot.
To 1 quart red wine take 1 pint or more of water and add to that 4 crushed
cardamoms. Place this over the fire, and add further a little cinnamon and sugar
to make it as sweet as you like. When it has boiled awhile and the wine has a
taste of the spices pour it up in a mug of porcelain and serve it in cups. You
can proceed with white French wine in the same manner.
Lemonade.
Boil a gallon well water with a pound sugar and a lemon, the juice of which
squeeze out over a strainer. Then pour on it 1 quart French wine, when it is
ready to serve. Lemonade with juices are made similarly but the lemons are then
left out and the water may be cold.
