without seeds--in case of fever only the juice--pour off the water and sweeten.
53. Apple Beverage. Take 8 washed apples divided into 4 parts with the peel, the
yellow rind of 1/2 and the juice of a whole lemon, 1 piece of cinnamon and 1/2
cupful of washed raisins, and 1/2 cupful of currants.
This is boiled with 2 quarts of water until the apples are tender, then pour
through a sieve, sweeten and serve cold.
With the spices left out, this is also a very nice drink for the sick. Instead
of raisins and currants, a crust of brown bread can be cooked with the apples,
omitting the lemon peel.
54. Violet Vinegar. A soothing drink for the sick, especially in eases of
nervous disorders and headache. Take 2-3 handfuls of blue fragrant violets,
remove the stems, put the flowers into a bottle, fill with wine vin egar and set
aside in the sun, well corked, or near the stove, pour the vinegar through
blotting paper and put into a corked bottle.
Take a teaspoonful in a small glassful of water and sweeten according to taste.
55. Beverage of Preserved Fruit Juice for Invalids. Raspberry-, currant- or
cherry juice, particularly rasp berry vinegar mixed with water, are very
refreshing and beneficial in cases of fever, but the latter should not be given
to those having lung troubles. Strawberry juice with selters (or appolinaris)
water is particularly pal atable and quite harmless.
56. Refreshing and beneficial Beverage of Coffee and Selters Water. Mix 1 cupful
of good coffee with a small bottle of selters water, sweeten according to taste
and drink cold.
Among these drinks, coffee, tea and chocolate can almost always be given to
invalids, if the physician does not object, Nob. 18, 20, 21, 22, 29, 33, 34, 36,
37 and 39 may also be given to invalids besides those beverages noted above as
being adopted tor the sick-room.
